Newcastle is best place for staycations according to new study

With many people reluctant to jet off abroad during the pandemic, amid lockdown and quarantine fears, staycations are being seen as the best option for a summer escape.

And it seems that Newcastle is the very best place to spend it.

According to a new study, the city tops the list of best-value staycations destinations in the UK and, while those of us who live here are in no doubt of its many merits, it appears that it's those attractions combined with its ease on the pocket that really impresses visitors.

An analysis of 30 of Britain's most popular towns and cities saw Newcastle reign supreme as the UK’s best budget holiday-at home-destination when looking at public green space, hotels and attractions.

It beat tourist hot-spot York into second place.

The study, by bingo site tombola, calculated public green space, budget-value hotels and attractions by the number of tourists and individuals in each of the locations.

The cities were then given a score out of 10 and ranked.

Following Newcastle and York the list had Dover in third place followed by Brighton, Inverness, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Reading.

Google search analysis also showed Newcastle to have a large number of hotels for the number of tourists - equating to 8,294 tourists per budget-friendly hotel compared to a whopping 45,020 tourists per budget hotel in London.

It also boasted plenty of budget-friendly attractions.

While Newcastle and York came top overall for the best-value destination, there was good news too for Stratford-upon-Avon as it emerged as having ideal opportunities for social distancing.

Shakespeare's birthplace was picked out as offering the most public parks, gardens and outdoor play areas.
