Newcastle insider breaks silence on takeover and feels new owners would ensure 'sky was the limit'

Newcastle United loan manager Shola Ameobi has broken the club's silence on the proposed takeover talks with Amanda Staveley's Middle East consortium.

Until today, Newcastle had issued only a "no comment" status on suggestions of a game-changing link-up with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Group.

But Ameobi - speaking to Sky Sports - has revealed he was one of the staff members furloughed but stated that he'd had some reassurance on his job from Lee Charnley.

However, his standout remarks about the takeover reveal that like the fans the potential dawn of a new era at St James' Park is something to get excited about.

He said: "They know Mike Ashley has wanted to sell the club for a number of years and it hasn’t quite materialised.

"The fans want to see investment poured into the club and if this does go ahead, there is a real excitement and buzz as to how and what could happen going forward.

"We have everything here - the fans, infrastructure and stadium - if we get the right owners who want to invest in the right way - the sky's the limit."

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce has not spoken publicly since March.

But Ameobi feels he should keep his job as boss.

He said: "I’m a guy who doesn’t like to make rash decisions. Steve Bruce has obviously done a terrific job with what he has had to work with.

"For me, Steve is a manager who is very experienced.

"My advice would be to stay with what we have.

"When a new owner comes in, they want to know how the club runs and what they’ve got in the club and I think, for me, it’s important we give stability to what we have here.

"Then moving forward, you can then make the decisions you see fit once you’ve embedded yourself in the club and once you know what it is about."

And revealing the communication from Charnley, Ameobi became the first employee to speak about the furloughing situation - something that has not been acknowledged by the club so far.

The loan manager said: "I think the one thing over the last six weeks while we’ve been on furlough, there’s not really been any communication, we’re not allowed to do our day to day job, so communication hasn’t been there.

"Lee Charnley has sent a couple of emails over this time to reassure us about what steps they’re trying to take but like you can imagine everything is silent.

"Mike likes to do things discreetly and in his own way, and as employees we don’t get to know any of that, so we’re the same as you guys, just waiting and seeing what comes."
