Newcastle injury boost ahead of Chelsea Premier League clash

Newcastle United have received an injury boost ahead of the Premier League fixture against Chelsea in 10 days' time.

Steve Bruce's side currently have a host of stars unavailable through injury, with Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey all among the first team players currently unavailable.

The Magpies' recent downturn in form over the festive period, with three straight losses followed by a draw away to Rochdale in the FA Cup, has coincided with the poor run of results.

But Bruce has been dealt a possible boost for the visit of Frank Lampard's side on January 18, with the news that Allan Saint-Maximin is back in training.

Frank Lampard on Olivier Giroud's future

Newcastle released an update on his return to fitness, confirming that the winger is now back training outside with the squad as he continues his recovery.

The winger has put in a number of impressive performances this season, despite a difficult start to life in the Premier League. But a hamstring injury picked up against Southampton in December meant a spell on the sidelines for the 22-year-old.

The French star has missed the last five Premier League games, as well as the FA Cup tie against Rochdale, but could be back for the game against Chelsea.

Saint-Maximin could potentially feature in Newcastle's next clash against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday, or the FA Cup replay against Rochdale on Tuesday, before the game against Chelsea the following Saturday.
