Newcastle Hunters' season-opening double-header called off

THE Newcastle Hunters' scheduled Waratah League season-openers against Penrith at Newcastle Basketball Stadium on Saturday night were postponed amid ongoing concerns about coronavirus.

Newcastle Basketball management made the decision on Saturday morning after advice from Basketball NSW management.

GAME OVER: The Newcastle Hunters' season opener is the latest sporting event cancelled because of coronavirus.

"Basketball NSW has made the decision to suspend all Basketball NSW managed programs, events and fixtures until further notice," read a statement on the BNSW website.

"Basketball NSW will consult with local associations regarding their own domestic competitions next week. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our basketball family, however, the health and welfare of players, staff, officials and fans is paramount.

"Further updates will be provided in the coming days and weeks."

Newcastle Basketball junior club and senior domestic competitions will continue as normal until further notice.
