Newcastle hospital named among the best in the world by report

A Newcastle hospital has been ranked one of the best in the world by celebrated US magazine Newsweek.

The Freeman Hospital was chosen after 2,200 hospitals in 27 countries from across the globe including the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia were analysed. Newsweek's final 'World's Best Hospitals 2022' list is based on recommendations from over 80,0000 medical experts, patient surveys and medical key performance indicators on hospitals such as quality of treatment and hygiene measures.

The table is divided into two sections - numbers one to 150, and a collective group from 151 to 250. The Freeman Hospital was placed in the 151 to 250 group.

A separate list was also drawn up for the best hospitals in the individual countries which saw the Freeman placed ninth out of 121 UK hospitals with Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary placed 10th.

Other placings in the North East were for Hexham General Hospital, Northumberland (21), Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, (50), Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, Cramlington, (57), North Tyneside General Hospital (77) and University Hospital of North Durham (113).

The first three places were taken by US hospitals while there were nine from the UK, including the Freeman, in the top 250.

The highest ranked UK hospital was St Thomas' in London at 41, followed by University College Hospital, London at 54 and Addenbrooke's in Cambridge at 79.

Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief, Newsweek, said: "The goal of this study is to provide the best data-based comparison of hospital reputation and performance across countries.

"We hope this will be useful not only to patients and families seeking the best care for themselves and loved ones, but also to hospitals as they benchmark themselves against their peers during a period of unprecedented change."
