Newcastle hero Alan Shearer lauds Karl Darlow and says there was 'no way' Liverpool would score

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has said there was no way Liverpool were scoring past Karl Darlow in the goalless draw tonight.

Darlow was named man of the match for his wonderful performance against the champions, as the Reds had a number of opportunities denied by the Magpies shot-stopper.

Mohamed Salah had a brilliant chance for the visitors at St. James' Park in the first-half, but the 30-year-old was equal to his effort with perhaps the save of the game.

The Newcastle man then kept out Roberto Firmino's header on 45 minutes, before scrambling across to deny Sadio Mane in the second-half.

The Reds kept coming against a stubborn Newcastle defence, but Darlow was alive to pretty much everything - and even denied Firmino again from a header late on.

Darlow is currently Steve Bruce 's first-choice goalkeeper with Martin Dubravka on the bench and against the reigning champions and current table-toppers, the former really proved his worth.

Shearer was visibly delighted on Amazon Prime Video's coverage of the 0-0 stalemate, and had nothing but praise for Darlow's superb display.

"They had some really good chances, but for some poor finishing and some exceptional goalkeeping from Karl Darlow," the Newcastle legend said on Liverpool.

"We’ve just heard from him and he should be very proud of his performance.

"You know when you’re playing against Liverpool, the quality of their forwards, you’re going to have to have a good game. You’re going to have to rely on the goalkeeper at one stage of the game.

"In the second-half, when required, he came up with the goods. He was big and strong and he kept them out.

"There was no way they were going to get past him this evening. The defenders in front of him worked extremely hard, but when they got past the defenders, he was exceptional. Superb."
