Newcastle have already found top player who can do things in training team-mates have never seen

Jamal Lewis has admitted that Allan Saint-Maximin has done things in training that the Newcastle United left-back has never seen before.

The gifted Frenchman has proved a big hit with supporters since completing his £16.5m move from Nice back in 2019.

Newcastle look a completely different side going forward when Saint-Maximin is fit and firing and few Premier League defenders can cope with the forward's speed, tricks and dribbling ability.

While Saint-Maximin has produced some special moments in a black-and-white shirt, including a stunning individual goal against Burnley and a hat-trick of assists at Bournemouth, the 24-year-old has, literally, earned a round of applause from his team-mates during training games, too.

Callum Wilson previously said that it was only in training that he appreciated how skilful Saint-Maximin really is and Lewis can certainly offer a unique perspective as a defender tasked with stopping the Magpies' talisman in 11 v 11 games at Benton.

"He's top. He's really good," he told United View. "Some of the things I've seen him do in training I've not seen ever. How he can go from zero to a hundred...

"Sometimes, I don't think even he knows what he's doing. He probably does but it doesn't look like it.

"He's just so off the cuff sometimes. Some of the things he creates are just so special. He's a really special player and a great guy as well.

"He's someone that I love playing with when he's on the wing. Obviously, he's playing a little bit further forward at the moment but if he does play on the wing, he's someone that I really enjoy playing with."
