Newcastle handed boost before Manchester United fixture but trouble could lie ahead

The decision which rules Manchester United midfielder Fred out of contention for this weekend's clash with Newcastle United could also spell trouble for the Magpies.

News broke on Wednesday lunchtime of the sport's world governing body's message to the Premier League after top-flight clubs prevented players from representing their country.

Travelling to red-list countries would have meant the likes of Fred and Liverpool stars Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino would have had to isolate for 10 days upon their return, missing several games.

Brazil have asked FIFA to invoke the ruling, and the Times reports Paraguay are among the South American countries following suit with a request.

This could spell bad news for Newcastle and Miguel Almiron, who did not travel to play for Paraguay in World Cup qualifying fixtures against Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.

The Magpies playmaker will likely now be unavailable for Saturday's visit to Old Trafford, adding to Steve Bruce's selection headache.

Callum Wilson was substituted with a thigh complaint in United's draw to Southampton a fortnight ago, while Ryan Fraser has returned from international duty with Scotland with a 'knock' that required a protective boot.
