Newcastle hand non-league hot shot trial as under-23s continue to cast the net

Newcastle United have handed a trial to Hebburn Town's 21-year-old striker Cedwyn Scott.

The forward will work in the under-23s under the watch of Chris Hogg after being spotted by the Magpies following scoring displays in Ebac Northern League Division One.

He has scored 20 goals in his last nine games and was also being tracked by Sunderland. Scott is a former Huddersfield Town Academy player who will now get a chance with Newcastle's under-23 group from Monday.

United have handed players from unusual backgrounds trials and contracts recently. Ludwig Francilette got a contract after dropping into French amateur football, while a move for French player Florian Indalecio came after the player had been working as a bricklayer in Australia following years out of the professional game.

"We are really proud and so pleased for Cedwyn," Kevin Bolam, Hebburn manager said.

"We think the world of him, he’s so down to earth, we wish him all of the best and we really hope it goes well.

"I’ve always thought there was a player in there, but in the last six to eight weeks, he has gone on to another level.

"He has worked so hard, he has adapted his game, and what the boy has done is fantastic.

"Yes, we have helped him along the way, but sometimes it is not about the coach, it’s about the player himself.

"It’s been down to him and his absolute commitment to improving."
