Newcastle goal hero Allan Saint-Maximin played through pain to score on his mother's birthday

Allan Saint-Maximin has revealed he played through the pain barrier to score his first goal for Newcastle United.

A first-half header from the Frenchman set United on their way to a fifth win of the season and moved them on to 19 points.

Although, Saint-Maxmin left the field with a heavily strapped ankle meaning he may need to be patched up again for the weekend's clash with Southampton.

The winger said: "In England you have to walk out when you have some pain.

"It's what I do.

"I started thinking I wouldn't go and then I told the coach I wanted to play.

"Even if I have pain, I got one goal and we won."

When asked about his goal the French star said: "I am really happy to score my first goal for Newcastle.

"I never thought it would be with my head!

"I am also happy for the  best striker with four goals (pointing to Shelvey).

"We now have to recover really well.

"We have to win the next game against Southampton."

And there was further reason to celebrate in South Yorkshire for the ex-Nice winger.

Saint-Maxmin, speaking to Amazon Prime, added: "I am really proud because this was the birthday of my mother.

"And I scored my first goal for the club for my mother."
