Newcastle given more time to extend Matty Longstaff and Andy Carroll's contracts until season ends

Newcastle United will be in a position to extend Matty Longstaff and Andy Carroll's current deals until the end of play this season with the campaign set to run beyond their existing contracts.

United need to notify Carroll soon of their intentions on whether he has won an extension to his contract or not.

Initially, Carroll had to trigger a one-year extension by playing a certain amount of games but that has been impossible due to the suspension of football due to the virus pandemic.

However, United also had a clause to trigger the deal whenever they felt necessary.

Longstaff's deal is entering the final month but talks may resume on an extension in the coming days.

Following the Premier League meeting at the start of this week, a statement read: “At Monday's Shareholders' meeting, Premier League clubs unanimously agreed to be allowed to renegotiate and enter into short term contract extensions with players whose deals are due to expire on 30 June of this year."

It was agreed by all Shareholders that clubs and players can mutually agree to extend their contracts beyond 30 June until the end of the season.

Richard Masters, the Premier League Chief Executive, said: "What we decided today is to ensure as far as possible that clubs complete the season with the same squad they had available prior to the suspension of the campaign.

"Players can extend their contracts beyond 30 June until the end of the season, but it must be agreed by both parties."

“Clubs and players will now have until 23 June to agree extensions.”

But players also have the right to turn short-term extensions if they want to preserve themselves for action with a new club.
