Newcastle freshers being offered free parmos as they arrive in city

Oh to be a student again! While we're not saying by any stretch of the imagination that hard work isn't involved in getting a university degree, but there's a reason your uni days are often referred to as 'the best years of your life'.

And a lot of that is down to all the partying that goes on, leading to some epic hangovers in lectures and seminars.

No talk of partying would be complete without mentioning Freshers Week as that is where it all begins and the Freshers festivities are now in full force at both Newcastle and Northumbria Universities.

And as well as bar crawls and appearances from Love Island stars, there are also plenty of freebies and discounts for new students in the city to take advantage of.

And one that has caught our eye is Manjaros, the restaurant that dubs itself 'King of the Parmos' is giving away free parmos this week!

A Manjaros parmo (Evening Gazette)

Revealing all on their Facebook page, Manjaros posted "To all #freshers of #newcastleuniversity and #northumbriauniversity, Don’t forget to collect your FREE #PARMO and more, from our freshers stand at the #university during freshers week!

"Experience your first #manjaros on us!"

Now freshers, if you aren't from the North East and don't have a clue what a parmo is, let us give you a quick education.

According to Google, a parmo is ‘a dish consisting of deep-fried breaded chicken, pork, or other meat covered with béchamel sauce and cheese and then grilled, typically sold as takeaway food.’

The parmo's original name was Escalope Parmesan and it is very similar to the veal or chicken Parmigiana which is commonly eaten in Australia as a local pub meal or in Australian and American Italian restaurants.
