Newcastle fear cheeky moment may just give fuming Southampton extra motivation at St James' Park

Callum Wilson has admitted that Jacob Murphy's wave may just give Southampton some extra motivation when the Saints face Newcastle United in the second-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Murphy bid Duje Caleta-Car farewell after the Southampton defender was sent off for a second bookable offence after taking out Allan Saint-Maximin in the closing stages of Newcastle's 1-0 win in the first-leg on Tuesday night. Caleta-Car was far from happy as he walked off the field at St Mary's and the Croatian muttered a few words in Murphy's direction.

The exchange happened just a few seconds after Caleta-Car pushed Bruno Guimaraes after taking issue with how the Newcastle midfielder roared in delight when referee Stuart Attwell brandished the second yellow. Bruno's team-mates were quick to step in and Joelinton and Murphy both shoved Caleta-Car before the latter waved the centre-back off the field.

"That just summed up his character," Wilson said of Murphy on the Footballer's Football Podcast. "The guy has been sent off and he's waving him off the field.

"He's like that every day just giving jokes out. It was good, it was funny, and it's made a little bit of a thing on the internet. It went a bit viral. Too funny.

"We were just laughing but, obviously, it's probably going to give them a little bit of motivation going into the second-leg, which you want to limit, because we have still got a job to do when we get to St James' Park. We will back ourselves. It is going to be a tough game, but one we are looking forward to."

Caleta-Car will be eligible to play in the second-leg at St James' because the Southampton defender will serve his one-match ban when the Saints face Blackpool in the FA Cup fourth-round on Saturday.
