Newcastle fans 'will not be inspired' by signing Celtic man who has 'mind set on move'

Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer has his 'mind set' on a move to Newcastle United, according to reports in Scotland.

However, according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, he is not a signing that will 'inspire' the Toon Army.

The Norway international defender is set to be highly courted this summer after spending five successful years in Glasgow.

The 23-year-old joined Celtic as a teenager but has blossomed into a quality central defender who has become an integral member of the Bhoys side who won a treble treble between 2017 and 2020.

He has been tipped to move on to pastures new this summer and Chronicle Live understands Newcastle are interested in a move this summer.

A lot will depend on the future of the Magpies' out of contract centre-halves Paul Dummett, Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez, while Florian Lejeune will return this summer after a successful loan spell with Alaves.

Nonetheless, the purchase of Ajer would be seen as a progressive signing of a player who has his best years ahead of him and according to the Scottish Daily Mail, he has his 'mind set' on a move to St James' Park.

However, Robinson is not convinced his capture will 'inspire' Newcastle fans.

“There will be a few clubs watching Ajer," Robinson told Football Insider.

“I do not think he has set the world alight up at Celtic this season. It is not a bad signing and you could probably get him at a decent price but Newcastle fans will not be inspired by that.

“Recruitment is going to extremely important for Steve Bruce this summer as will having a fully fit squad at the start of pre-season. That would be a massive boost after the injuries they have had.”
