Newcastle fans take Boycott Booze Cruise along the Tyne

Groups of Newcastle United fans may be boycotting their team's opening match of the season - but that's not stopping some from having a day out.

United supporters organised a 'Boycott Booze Cruise Party' along the Tyne on Sunday morning. The fans say they have had enough of Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who has overseen two relegations in 12 years. Supporters are aggrieved at what they say is a lack of investment in the team and a slide in stature for the club, who were regulars in European competitions before the Sports Direct chief took over at St James' Park .

The fans boarded the River Escape Boat on Newcastle's Quayside at 10.30am this morning. The ship departed at 11 and was due to return at 1pm.

The fans plan to disembark and walk to St James' Park to demonstrate with other groups boycotting today's match.

All profits from the cruise - which cost £15 to join - will be donated to a food bank.

Newcastle and Arsenal kick off at 2pm.
