Newcastle fans slammed for Steve McClaren chants and told Steve Bruce deserves 'respect'

Mike Ashley deserves to be the subject of Newcastle United fans' frustrations - not Steve Bruce.

That's the view of talkSPORT pundit Jamie O'Hara, who believes the United head coach deserves 'respect' for the job he has done so far in the St James' Park hotseat.

Sections of the travelling Toon Army drew the unfavourable comparison between Bruce and former boss Steve McClaren during the 1-1 friendly draw at Rotherham United on Tuesday night.

The Magpies looked to be on course for their second pre-season defeat in three matches until makeshift striker Jeff Hendrick equalised six minutes from time.

Bruce's future on Tyneside was the topic of intense scrutiny last season following an abysmal mid-season run which dragged Newcastle to the brink of the relegation zone.

The 60-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the club, and Tuesday night's chants at the New York Stadium provided further evidence of his rocky relationship with supporters.

O'Hara sympathises with disgruntled fans in their opposition to unpopular owner Ashley, but 'can't believe' Bruce was given 'stick' at a pre-season friendly.

The former Tottenham midfielder believes the Magpies head coach delivered a 'decent season' last time out, and is entitled to credit for his achievements in the role so far.

O'Hara told talkSPORT: "I wouldn't say he's gone above and beyond, I'd say he's done well with what he's been given. They finished 12th last season, and you can't get away from the fact that's a decent season for Newcastle and the situation they are in.

"I totally understand that Newcastle fans have had it in the neck with Mike Ashley and the board, I get that. Protest at them, not Steve Bruce, because he kept them up. They were favourites to go down last season.

"They had a bit of a bad spell in the middle of last season where everyone was on his back, but once he got players back from injury they kicked on and finished the season really well.

"I can't believe they're giving him stick in pre-season when the season hasn't even started, after the season that he's had. You have to respect the man for what he's done."
