Newcastle fans share takeover theories with Rafa Benitez set to join Everton

Former Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is understood to be on the verge of securing a Premier League return with Everton.

The ex-Liverpool boss has reportedly been offered the vacant post at Goodison Park following positive talks with the club's board.

Benitez has been out of work since leaving Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Pro in January, and is set for a return to England's top-flight almost two years after leaving St James' Park.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was considered a leading candidate to succeed Carlo Ancelotti on Merseyside, but the Liverpool Echo reports a deal for Benitez is edging closer on Wednesday night.

The expected move would dash the faint hopes of certain United fans, with the 61-year-old repeatedly linked with an unlikely return in the event of a takeover.

Bookmakers regularly included Benitez in the shortlist to replace Steve Bruce as the pressure mounted on the current head coach at various junctures over the last two seasons.

A remarkable late-season revival had cooled speculation over Bruce's future on Tyneside, despite Mike Ashley's ongoing legal battles with the Premier League.

The wantaway United owner is committed to resurrecting the deal with the consortium consisting of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben brothers.

News of Benitez's imminent arrival at Everton has prompted almost inevitable fears from supporters over the progress of the anti-competition claim and the upcoming arbitration proceedings.

Here is how Newcastle fans reacted to the breaking story that Benitez is set to be appointed at Everton.

'Miles away'

'Convinced'

'Not going to happen'

'Best of luck'

'Why is everyone moaning?'

'Brilliant appointment'
