Newcastle fans in Hong Kong hoping for a permanent base to cheer on United

With safety secured we can all make arrangements for a brand new season of Premier League endeavour.

None more so than our friends a long way off in a turbulent and decimated Hong Kong.

United have a fervently loyal supporters club in this one-time British colony and, buoyed by the retention of top-flight football, they are busy making plans to tie down a new base.

It is an admirable effort considering that Hong Kong has faced not just the shuddering effects of a worldwide coronavirus pandemic but the political upheaval and rioting sparked by a rigid Chinese clampdown.

However a soccer-mad city remains steadfast in its loyalty to the Premier League and none more so than its black-and-whiters who are about to put on an exhibition of NUFC collectibles.

Official Tammie Cheung tells me: "Our situation here is getting better but pubs and restaurants aren't fully operational yet. Nevertheless I found a place where we are organising an exhibition related to Newcastle United and where we can watch football matches. We hope it will become a centre for NUFC fans in Hong Kong.

"I know we were safe few weeks ago but who would have thought we would finish 12th? Not me at least.

"Our new headquarters is really a lucky place. We have already watched three games there live. We tied with Spurs and beat both West Ham and Fulham. I really hope we can make this our permanent headquarters."
