Newcastle fans have #RafaAppreciationWeek trending as Benitez enters the final week of his contract

Newcastle United fans have #RafaAppreciationWeek trending on social media as Rafa Benitez enters in to the final week of his contract as Magpies boss.

Reports on Sunday morning suggested that Benitez will see out the final week of his contract before ending his three-and-a-half year stay on Tyneside.

As it stands, Benitez is yet to agree terms on a new deal at Newcastle but it is understood that United have not got a plan B in place to replace the 59-year-old should he leave the club.

If this is the end, it will be the final straw for many Newcastle fans after 12 years of the Mike Ashley regime. Benitez had re-energised a fanbase that had previously been apathetic and had fans dreaming of better things to come.

But just weeks after the 50th anniversary of Newcastle's last major trophy success, their greatest chance of ending that trophy drought is set to slip through their finger tips.

Benitez, who has won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, Coppa Italia and two La Liga titles, will be allowed to walk away for free, leaving the club without a management team four days before the playing squad are set to return for pre-season.

Newcastle could still salvage the situation, of course. They have a week to convince Benitez to remain as Magpies boss but he reportedly has a lucrative offer on the table from Chinese club Dalian Yifang.

And with it looking more and more like the end of the road for Benitez at Newcastle, the Toon Army have taken to Twitter to show their appreciation for his work at the club.

From sticking with the club following relegation to the Championship, to winning promotion and earning a top half finish in their first season back in the Premier League, it has all been covered in Magpies fans' messages to the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss.
