Newcastle fans deliver crushing verdict on United's Premier League survival hopes

Newcastle United fans overwhelming feel that the club will be playing Championship football next season.

That's according to the results of two Chronicle Live polls carried out yesterday.

We asked supporters on social media and an online poll whether they thought the Magpies would be relegated come the end of the season.

And the results in both came down heavily on the side of relegation for Steve Bruce's side.

There are still nine Premier League games to go but, following Saturday's dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton, it seems most hope has gone for United's passionate fanbase.

Mike Ashley will stick with head coach Bruce, despite many believing the Amex Stadium horror show would be his final act in charge of Newcastle.

Tottenham are next up after the international break, with Liverpool, Leicester, Manchester City and Arsenal still to face before the season draws to a close.

Our question was a simple one - with nine games to go and Bruce set to stay, are Newcastle going down?

A massive 91.2% thought that yes, that would happen, with only 8.8% backing a survival bid.

A similar poll ran in articles had a similar outcome, with currently 89% believing relegation is coming.

Newcastle will hope the return of Callum Wilson, who is expected to be fit to face Spurs on April 5, and Allan Saint-Maximin, will help them find the form they showed in the wins over Everton and Southampton.

However, they remain the club's only victories in 2021, and the form table since the turn of the year shows the Magpies currently second bottom, with only Southampton having a worse record since January 1.

United are likely to have to cope without midfielder Isaac Hayden, with the former Arsenal man awaiting news of a scan on his knee injury picked up at Brighton.
