Newcastle fans can't believe Albert's goal against Manchester United is missing from MotD2 montage

It was the crowning glory of the most magnificent of days.

Newcastle United's 5-0 win over Premier League champions Manchester United way back in 1996 was capped off by a sublime chip from defender Philippe Albert, leaving Peter Schmeichel helpless.

If ever a performance - and a single goal - encapsulated Kevin Keegan's attacking side at their free-flowing best, then this was it.

It was all the more sweeter, of course, after Manchester United had broken hearts all over Tyneside by pipping Newcastle to the league title a few months earlier, and then then handing out a 4-0 Charity Shield thrashing at Wembley.

Even now, watching Albert's incredible effort arc over Schmeichel - who had been instrumental in denying the Magpies in the Red Devils' 1-0 win at St James' Park the previous season - sends shivers down the spine of any Newcastle fan.

And so you can imagine the outrage when it didn't appear on a montage of some of the best Premier League chips on BBC's Match of the Day 2.

Following Bukayo Saka's goal for Arsenal against Chelsea, host Mark Chapman signed off the programme on Sunday night with a collection of some of the greatest chips in the Premier League era.

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona's famous effort against Sunderland featured, as did efforts from Manchester City's Robinho, Aston Villa's Dalian Atkinson, Man United's John O'Shea and Southampton's Matt le Tissier.

But no Philippe Albert.

It was, of course, just a 30-second collection during the end credits, but it still produced some reaction from Newcastle fans on social media.

Here's a selection of some of the best responses:

Jason Hughes: I was shouting exactly that at the TV. That and the Cantona one should have been the only ones on there. John O’Shea?? You kidding me!

Gary Young: Watching that ball float over Schmeichel as a kid was pure heaven, a legendary game.

Richie Rowlands: If it was Man United who scored that chip then they all would of been all over it.

David Huddart: It was a classic against a giant world-class keeper!

Simon Patrick: I heard the big 6 didn’t want Albert's included.
