Newcastle face longer wait over Premier League Project Restart as meeting delayed

Premier League chiefs will delay an important shareholders meeting to discuss the next steps in their Project Restart plans until after the Prime Minister’s speech next Sunday.

Boris Johnson is due to outline the ways in which he intends to ‘unlock the various parts of the UK economy’, which was expected to take place on Thursday but has now been pushed back to Sunday.

The Premier League was due to convene in their latest shareholder meeting on Friday, following the government’s announcement, but the meeting will now take place on Monday, with the top-flight taking its cue from the government’s position.

If the Premier League is able to push ahead with their Project Restart plans, which would see matches resumed next month, games will be played behind closed doors as neutral venues as the government has already made it clear that they will not approve matches at home stadia.

The Mirror adds that the eight to 10 grounds to stage fixtures will be chosen by the government and police, with Wembley back under consideration while the likes of Liverpool’s Anfield and Newcastle’s St James’ Park, located in densely populated areas, will not be used.

However, a number of clubs have expressed concerns about the plans to use neutral venues, with it suggested that they want relegation to be removed this season, and a majority of 14 clubs will need to approve the plans in Monday’s meeting.
