Newcastle eye January swoop for Manchester United defender Brandon Williams

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams is being eyed up by one of their Premier League rivals.

Our colleagues at Chronicle Live are reporting that Newcastle United have been monitoring Williams ahead of next month's transfer window.

Any potential deal for Williams to move to Tyneside would strictly be loan-based.

The 20-year-old made his breakthrough in the first team at Old Trafford last season, featuring regularly in the Premier League and Europa League.

But he has struggled to break into the side this year.

He has made just four appearances, with his only top-flight outing coming last Sunday in the superb comeback win at Southampton.

The form of Luke Shaw and new signing Alex Telles has bumped Williams down the pecking order.

Toon boss Steve Bruce has an excellent rapport with his former Old Trafford team-mate Mike Phelan and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and any offer from the Magpies would be taken seriously for Williams.

Southampton are also keen on taking the youth graduate on a loan deal for the second half of the season after attempting to lure him to St Mary's in September.

Williams is still in the long-term picture for the Reds, with the youngster tied down until 2024.
