Newcastle United have distanced themselves from reports over a potential move for Will Hughes.
Elsewhere, the contract lengths for both Federico Fernandez and Jacob Murphy have been confirmed.
Here are the latest Newcastle United headlines for July 8:
No Hughes talks
Newcastle United have not held any talks regarding the possible addition of Watford midfielder Will Hughes.
The Magpies did scout the 26-year-old during the Graham Carr era at St James' Park when he recommended the player to Newcastle chiefs during his Derby County days.
Reports have suggested that United are talking to his current club the Hornets about a deal to bring him north with Isaac Hayden heading the other way.
However, that has been denied by Toon sources and Newcastle are keen to hold on to Hayden.
Murphy's bumper deal
Jacob Murphy has signed a bumper long-term deal with Newcastle United - after interest from elsewhere came to nothing.
The Toon winger, who impressed last season, had attracted interest from Glasgow Rangers and newly promoted Watford, but opted to sign a six-year deal at St James' Park.
It means Murphy, who was due to see his current arrangement run out in 2022, was thrown one last chance to make it big at United last season by Steve Bruce.
And he responded in style with a fantastic campaign which resulted in him signing a contract until 2027.
Fernandez's contract
Federico Fernandez could end up staying at Newcastle United until he is 35 after the veteran signed a two-year contract - which gives the Magpies the option of extending his new deal by a further 12 months in 2023.
Since Steve Bruce was appointed, in 2019, a host of experienced players have been tied down by the club, including Martin Dubravka (32), Jonjo Shelvey (29), Matt Ritchie (31), Karl Darlow (30), Ciaran Clark (31), Dwight Gayle (30) and, now, Fernandez (32).
Bruce has been keen to keep hold of that dressing room core - those older heads who know what it means to play for the Magpies - and, tellingly, the Newcastle head coach has been listened to.
De Marco's role
It is exactly a week since Mike Ashley issued that club statement and the calls for the Premier League to hold Newcastle United's upcoming arbitration hearing in public have only grown louder.
Since then, the club's supporters, suitor Amanda Staveley and a number of politicians, including Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah, have all urged the top-flight to agree to hold the dispute out in the open.
However, whether it is held in public or not, this arbitration hearing is due to get under way this month and two QCs are about to take centre stage: Shaheed Fatima and Nick De Marco
They operate in very different fields but it is easy to see how Fatima and De Marco will dovetail in this case on Ashley's behalf.
Wilson at Wembley
Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson is 'working hard' to ensure he 'hits the ground running' for the Magpies this season.
But the 29-year-old took some time out of his busy pre-season regime on Wednesday evening to take in England's historic semi-final victory over Denmark at the European Championships.
Wilson was one of the lucky 64,950 fans packed into Wembley Stadium to see England reach their first major tournament final in 55 years.
