Newcastle evening headlines with Wayne Rooney exclusive and Jose Mourinho on St James' Park hoodoo

Wayne Rooney has given an exclusive interview on Newcastle United's transfer interest and the prospect of working with Sir Bobby Robson.

Elsewhere, Jose Mourinho has opened up on his mentality of attempting to end his own St James' Park hoodoo.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for June 29:

Rooney exclusive

Wayne Rooney has revealed it "would have been an honour" to have played for Sir Bobby Robson with Newcastle United.

Much has been made of the Magpies' bidding war with Manchester United back in 2004 when Rooney was red-hot property after bursting on to the scene with Everton and lighting up 2004 in an England shirt.

Rooney's fall out with David Moyes left a more ambitious version of Newcastle in with a shout of landing a deal that would have emulated the global coup when Alan Shearer joined the club in 1996.

The Three Lions legend spoke to Newcastle back in the summer of 2004 and while some critics thought it was a publicity stunt at the time, Rooney does not dismiss the fact it could have been a possibility.

Mourinho's SJP admission

Jose Mourinho has revealed he never gave up on winning a Premier League game at St James' Park despite having a 'very bad record' on Tyneside.

The Portuguese failed to win a top-flight fixture on the road against Newcastle United during his two spells at Chelsea and his stint at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho (talkSPORT)

Indeed, until Mourinho finally ended that hoodoo with Spurs, the 58-year-old had managed more away league games against Newcastle without winning than any other club in his career.

Mourinho eventually claimed three points at St James' at the eighth attempt last summer when Spurs defeated Newcastle 3-1 and, after the game, the Special One said he could 'finally look to Mr Robson's statue and laugh' because he usually 'left the stadium with a sad face'.

Almiron injury

Newcastle United are working with the Paraguayan FA after Miguel Almiron picked up a hamstring injury at the Copa America.

Almiron left the field visibly distressed in the 1-0 defeat to Uruguay as his country rounded off the group stages with a defeat.

Paraguay are through to the next stage and will face a quarter-final against Ecuador, Colombia or Peru but it remains to be seen whether Almiron appears again in the tournament.

His unhappiness as he left the field suggested he may know he's suffered a bad one, but whether he gets the green light to head back to the UK early is unclear.

Doncaster friendly

Newcastle United have announced their latest pre-season clash with the Magpies' pre-season schedule taking shape.

United will face League One side Doncaster Rovers on July 23 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Although, there is still no indication on whether away fans will be able to make the journey to South Yorkshire.

Mbappe takeover message

Newcastle United supporters' sense of humour is unrivalled and they proved it yet again in the aftermath of France's shock penalty shootout defeat against Switzerland.

The Euro 2020 favourites were booted out of the competition by Fabian Schar's Switzerland following a thrilling last 16 tie in Bucharest on Monday night.

France had been on course to book their place in the quarter-finals after Les Bleus came from behind to lead 3-1 with just 10 minutes to go, but Haris Seferovic and Mario Gavranovic both scored late on to take the game to extra time.

There was nothing to separate the two sides after a further 30 minutes of football so the game went to penalties and with Switzerland 5-4 up in the shootout, Kylian Mbappe missed to send the unfancied Swiss through to the last eight.

So what has Mbappe got to do with Newcastle? Well, at the height of the club's takeover saga a year ago, some supporters dared to dream that the Magpies may be able to tempt the PSG superstar to St James' Park one day.

Adarabioyo transfer message

Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo could rise to the challenge of playing for Newcastle United.

That's the view of Magpies legend Steve Howey, who believes the former Manchester City prospect could raise his game alongside 'solid' team-mates at St James' Park.

Adarabioyo enjoyed an impressive campaign despite Fulham's relegation to the Championship, and could be available for £10m this summer due to a reported release clause in his contract.

Ginola's coach response

David Ginola has been taken back to those long coach journeys watching Only Fools and Horses and Sid the Sexist with his Newcastle United team-mates....while reflecting on England's chances of winning Euro 2020.

The Frenchman joined the Magpies from Paris Saint-Germain back in the summer of 1995 and quickly proved a hit with the club's supporters.

However, although Ginola made a remarkable adjustment to life in the Premier League, the winger had to get his head around some notable differences between Tyneside and Paris.
