Newcastle evening headlines with Schar's blast and Lawrenson's Champions League dig at fans

Fabian Schar pulled no punches with a damning assessment of Newcastle United's performance in the defeat at Southampton.

Elsewhere, BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson has drawn criticism on social media for his dig at Magpies supporters.

Here are the top Newcastle United stories for November 7:

Schar's explosive interview

Fabian Schar turned the air blue on the South Coast after Newcastle United's 2-0 loss against Southampton.

The centre-back and his team-mates were easily beaten by the Saints and were forced to stay in Southampton overnight due to an airport closure.

Schar was far from at his best, but insisted the WHOLE team played s*** in an explosive rant that still made the cut - despite being on the club's official website, usually a safe haven in terms of criticism.

Lawrenson's dig

Mark Lawrenson has had a dig at Newcastle United supporters when talking about the future of manager Steve Bruce.

Bruce 's side were beaten 2-0 at Southampton on Friday night, and the Magpies boss has been criticised following the defeat on the south coast. So far this season in the Premier League, Newcastle have won three of their eight games, including an impressive 2-1 victory against Everton last weekend.

Now, when speaking to BBC's Football Focus, Lawrenson - a former Newcastle defensive coach - has jumped to Bruce's defence. As well as this, the former Liverpool defender has called Magpies supporters out for having unrealistic expectations.

Saints 'red zone' plan

Ralph Hasenhuttl praised Theo Walcott's performance in the 'red zone' as Southampton stormed to pole position in the Premier League with a dominant 2-0 victory over Newcastle.

Walcott pulled back the ball to strike partner Che Adams for Southampton's seventh-minute opener before Stuart Armstrong wrapped up all three points in the 82nd minute to put Hasenhuttl's men at the top of the table ahead of the weekend's fixtures.

It was a change of position for Walcott, with the injury to Danny Ings leaving space in the middle, and the 31-year-old impressed his manager.

'Save of the season'

Rob Elliot has praised his former Newcastle United team-mate Karl Darlow for pulling off the 'save of the season so far' against Southampton.

Jamaal Lascelles was forced to clear Jan Bednarek's effort off the line shortly after the restart, and moments later Darlow produced a stunning stop to deny Oriol Romeu's long-range effort.

The 30-year-old was at full stretch to get the faintest of touches on the ball with his top hand as it went on to crash against the crossbar and out of play.

United fans took to social media to praise Darlow for his latest impressive stop, but it was a save that was not discussed much by Sky Sports' commentators and pundits during their live coverage.

Walcott's penalty verdict

Shortly before the second goal, Southampton might have had a penalty when Theo Walcott went down in the area under a last-ditch challenge from Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles.

Replays showed that Lascelles may have got a bit of the ball followed by a fair bit of the player as Walcott was left needing treatment.

However, neither referee Peter Bankes or VAR adjudged it to be a foul.

Walcott disagreed with the views of Match of the Day host Gary Lineker and Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith on the incident.

National media verdict

It was not a great night for Newcastle United as they were beaten 2-0 by high-flying Southampton.

The Magpies were unable to build on their victory over Everton as they were outplayed by the Saints.

Che Adams put the home side ahead early on and Stuart Armstrong sealed the points with a second late on.

The result took Southampton top of the Premier League table ahead of the rest of the weekend's matches, while Newcastle remained 11th.

Here is a round-up of how some of our colleagues in the national media reported proceedings on the south coast.
