Newcastle evening headlines with Ramos transfer links, Paqueta silence and goalkeeper deal agreed

Newcastle United are said to be considering a move for Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, with reports from Portugal claiming a £25m deal could be reached. Elsewhere, Lucas Paqueta's agent has remained silent on fresh talk of a Magpies move.

Here are your top Newcastle United headlines for August 10.

Ramos links

Newcastle United already have the scouts assigned on missions in Portugal with Benfica a regular stop off spot during each season for Toon talent spotters.

The Magpies have now been linked with the Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos who scored against them in pre-season in a 3-2 win as well as eight goals last term. Reports in Portugal now state that Newcastle could bid £25million for the star.

Paqueta silence

Lyon's asking price at the start of the year was around £58million and while the Ligue 1 club seem prepared to lower the fee it remains to be seen whether Newcastle decide to make their move. There's no doubt that the move would delight Bruno but by the same token, he is far too professional and focused to be upset if it doesn't come off.

The player himself was always resigned to potentially spending this season in Ligue 1 with Lyon although as Bruno proved in January, things can change quickly leaving the Brazil star open minded. His current deal still has three years to run leaving Lyon in a strong position.

There's no doubt Newcastle like the midfielder but the price and timing of the deal have to be exactly right. Lucas and his agent were also silent on fresh talk of a move to Tyneside last night meaning it simply remains one to keep an eye on.

Smith to sign

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Jude Smith from Scottish side East Fife. The goalkeeper, 19, impressed the Magpies during a trial on Tyneside last month.

Newcastle will pay a small fee for the teenage shot-stopper, who also trained with Stoke City earlier this summer. Smith joined Celtic as a youngster before being released by the Scottish giants last summer.

Newcastle's transfer strategy

Premier League rivals Everton have gone gung-ho of late, with Amadou Onana and Connor Coady signed this week and Idrissa Gueye on the way. Aston Villa spent big at the beginning of the window, while Nottingham Forest believe the best way to shore up their Premier League status is by purchasing an entirely new squad.

While other clubs have been scattergun with their transfer approach this summer, it has been a measured strategy from the Magpies. Howe admits that the club are now only looking at a small number of targets after shrinking the size of their shortlist.

Howe's cup policy

Eddie Howe has made his policy on the domestic cup competitions very clear before the draw for the Carabao Cup second round.

Howe took Newcastle's FA Cup third round tie against Cambridge United seriously last January but the Magpies were beaten 1-0 in one of the shocks of the tournament's history on a day when a relegation battle was clearly on the minds of the players. But with the new season under way Howe has steered clear of mistakes made be managers that came before him when it comes to commenting on the cups.

World Cup 'pre-season'

Newcastle United players have been told not to expect a relaxing break during the World Cup later this year - despite a six week gap in the fixture list while the tournament unfolds in Qatar.

Meticulous Toon head coach Eddie Howe is preparing for a "second pre-season" with the prospect of warm weather training back on the agenda in November and December. United will break up for the World Cup after their home game with Chelsea on November 12.

And fans won't see them in Premier League action again until Boxing Day for the trip to Leicester City. The Premier League have already told teams they can stage friendly matches during the break.

Ferdinand and Ginola regrets

Les Ferdinand and David Ginola have both reflected on Newcastle United's near miss in the title race back in 1996 in an intriguing new film.

The duo, now both 55, spoke passionately about their time on Tyneside with Ferdinand admitting he thought the title, which would have been Newcastle's first in 69 years. The game Premier League film makers believe cost the Magpies most dear was the 4-3 defeat at Liverpool.
