Newcastle evening headlines with Ayoze Perez's tunnel reunion and Adam Armstrong transfer latest

Ayoze Perez's latest reunion with Newcastle United has proven he remains popular among his former team-mates.

Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has discussed the future of former Magpies prospect Adam Armstrong.

Here are your top Newcastle United stories for May 9:

Perez's reunion

It may be nearly two years since Ayoze Perez left Newcastle United but the Leicester City forward remains a popular figure with club staff.

Leicester's tunnel cam footage captured the scene outside the dressing rooms before and after the Magpies' 4-2 win at the King Power Stadium and Perez's entrance caught the eye of his former colleagues on Friday night.

Perez, like his Leicester team-mates, arrived in a club suit at 6.35pm and the handful of Newcastle staff members gathered, including player liaison officer Glenn Patterson, certainly took note.

"It's the best I've seen you dressed!" one of them said out of shot. "Never did that in Newcastle!"

Armstrong transfer talk

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray admits he hopes a Premier League club makes a 'ridiculous' offer for former Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong this summer.

The former Magpies prospect netted his third hat-trick of the season in Rovers' final-day 5-2 victory against Birmingham City on Saturday.

Armstrong finished the campaign with 28 goals - the most achieved by any player at Ewood Park since Alan Shearer in the 1995/96 season.

The 24-year-old is entering the final year of his deal, and a prolific campaign which has ended with nine goals in his final six matches has prompted inevitable speculation over his future.

Bruce's praise

Steve Bruce believes his side were “deadly” on the counter-attack against Leicester City - and has paid tribute to his back-room team after the 4-2 win over the Foxes.

United drafted in Graeme Jones as coach from AFC Bournemouth back in January, but has dovetailed well with Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, with Steve Harper adopting a caretaker Academy boss role.

Bruce felt like some of the work at training started to pay off on Friday night.

Shearer on Leicester's tactic

Newcastle United forward Callum Wilson benefitted from the high line of Leicester City that he 'absolutely loved' on Friday evening.

That was the verdict of the Magpies' record goalscorer Alan Shearer who believes his former side 'thoroughly deserved' their 4-2 win over the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

Goals from Joe Willock and Paul Dummett, as well as a brace from Wilson, put a serious dent in Leicester's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and moved the Magpies to within touching distance of sealing Premier League survival.

The hosts were dealt a blow pre-match when experienced defender Jonny Evans was forced to withdraw from the starting line-up with a heel injury.

However, Shearer feels it was Leicester's defensive set-up, as opposed to Evans' absence, that was the major contributing factor to their downfall.

Rodgers verdict

Brendan Rodgers has paid tribute to Newcastle United's 'strong' players for taking full advantage of Leicester City's 'poor errors' following the Magpies' 4-2 win at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle produced, arguably, their finest performance yet under Steve Bruce to stun the Champions League chasers on their own turf with a ruthless counter-attacking display.

Leicester, who were rocked by the late withdrawal of Jonny Evans in the warm-up, could have tightened their grip on third place but the Foxes made a strangely lethargic start.

Caglar Soyuncu's error in the build-up to Joe Willock's 23rd-minute opener summed up the hosts' slackness as the Leicester centre-back was punished for dawdling in a dangerous area.

Paul Dummett added a second a short while later after the Newcastle defender easily outjumped Wesley Fofana to head home from Matt Ritchie's corner.

Newcastle had Martin Dubravka to thank for making crucial saves to keep out Fofana, Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy in the first half but the Magpies were good value for their 2-0 lead at half-time.

Leicester had to pile even more bodies forward after the break and Newcastle soon exploited the hosts' high line with some clinical breakaways.

Toney's message

Former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney has hit back at his critics following a record-breaking season.

The Brentford forward enjoyed a memorable debut campaign in the Championship and netted his 31st league strike in the final-day victory at Bristol City.

It is a campaign which could still end in promotion for the Bees, with Thomas Frank's side preparing for a playoff tie with Bournemouth.

Toney made just two first-team appearances with the Magpies and enjoyed mixed success in loan spells at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic.
