Newcastle evening headlines with Arsenal warning, transfer 'hammer blows' and Kuol plan

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for January 2.

Transfer latest

Eddie Howe says that Newcastle United must use the January window to ensure they are adequately equipped for the second half of the season - and knows that injuries could play a part in his plans.

Howe has lost Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Targett for the foreseeable future but still hopes to have them back in his thinking before the end of the season. This time last year United were ready to go with the addition of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid but despite the two injury setbacks there is less urgency in the camp this winter.

When asked if the squad was strong enough to get through January without signing anybody, Howe said: "If we didn't sign anybody, I love the group. I think we have a really strong team.

Arsenal warning

Eddie Howe has warned that Newcastle United and Arsenal have both moved on as team significantly since their last meeting back in May.

That night Newcastle triumphed 2-0 and prevented Arsenal making it to the Champions League with a furious debrief for the visitors then featuring in the All or Nothing documentary. Mikel Arteta has been known to use such low points as motivation in his team talks and did so last season with tweets from Ivan Toney used in his pre-match meeting.

Yet Howe would not be drawn into any invitations to play mind games or use the win over Arsenal six months ago as a badge of honour. The 2-0 win over Arteta's man was a Youtube hit and has had over 1.1million views since May but Howe knows it means nothing now.

Fresneda link

Newcastle United are in the chase for Real Valladolid youngster Ivan Fresneda but have Atletico Madrid and Juventus for company.

The Spain Under-19 right-back has a release clause of £27million but that will rise to around £40million at the end of the season. A report in Marca shows Newcastle head scout Steve Nickson sitting with the player's agent Luis Bardaji during Real Valladolid's 2-0 La Liga defeat against Real Madrid.

Talent spotter Nickson watched the La Liga team's last game of 2022 and the report in Marca suggested a structured deal which could see Fresneda arrive in England before being back out to Valladolid until the end of the season. Newcastle are, of course, in a strong position in the right-back area with Kieran Trippier leading the team into Champions League contention this season as captain.

Kuol plan

Eddie Howe has spoken about plans for Garang Kuol after the 18-year-old officially became a Newcastle United player.

Signed from Central Coast Mariners for just £300,000 the teenager last year the teenager has since went on to star for Australia in the World Cup finals and is regarded as one of the game's best youngsters. Howe knows that finding the right club for Kuol on loan will be vital.

Speaking at his pre-Arsenal Press conference, Howe said: "It’s a possibility Garang could train with us for a little while. But I do think that for the player’s development, he needs to go and play.

Willock prediction

Eddie Howe is confident that Joe Willock has a big 2023 in store - and insists there is more to come from the former Arsenal youngster.

Willock heads back to his old club with Newcastle suddenly finding themselves in a grapple for a Champions League place. The midfielder has been a mainstay in Howe's team with 20 appearances, two goals and two assists so far.

Looking ahead to new year for Willock, Howe, speaking at his Press conference, said: "I have been really pleased with Joe. I think he is maturing nicely.
