Newcastle doctor could be sacked over allegations he hit two colleagues in the face

A doctor could be sacked after being accused of hitting two colleagues in the face.

Dr Abdul Basit is also accused of squeezing one of the unnamed medics' "neck with his hand".

The doctor, who practices in Newcastle and Brighton, faces a misconduct hearing over the allegations.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing is due to start in Manchester on September 2.

"The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that, on or about 15 May 2016, Dr Basit hit Dr A in the face and on the ear and hit Dr B in the face," states a summary of the allegations.

"It is further alleged that on one or more occasions between February 2016 and July 2016, Dr Basit pushed and/or shoved Dr A and squeezed Dr A’s neck with his hand."

The hearing, which can be heard in public, is scheduled to last for almost two weeks.

The MPTS has the power to impose various sanctions on doctors whose fitness to practice is impaired.

These include suspension and even being struck off.

The watchdog's role is separate from the investigatory role of the General Medical Council.

ChronicleLive contacted the MPTS for further comment over Dr Basit's case.
