Newcastle Covid-19 testing unit opens after local clusters

A new mobile Covid-19 testing unit is now operating in Co Down after reports of recent clusters in the area.

The testing unit, situated at St Mary's Primary School, Newcastle comes after a meeting with the Council and Public Health Agency on Thursday.

The Council say they are taking steps to reinforce the PHA guidance surrounding Coronavirus and a number of businesses in Newcastle took the decision to close their doors early this week.

A spokesperson for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council told Belfast Live: "Newry, Mourne and Down District Council can advise that a mobile Covid-19 testing unit is currently operational from St. Mary’s Primary School, Newcastle.

"Having previously hosted a mobile testing unit in the district, the Council understands the benefits of allowing residents access to testing under PHA guidance at a local level.

"The Council met with the Public Health Agency (PHA) (NI) yesterday (Thursday) afternoon regarding Covid-19 clusters in the Council area and will continue to work in close cooperation.

"The Council is taking steps to reinforce the PHA guidance through its social media platforms and is appealing to everyone to take personal responsibility for the health and safety of themselves, their families and others by adhering to the government guidelines."
