Newcastle could get double boost as Steve Bruce set to make changes at Bournemouth

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has hinted that Jonjo Shelvey and Nabil Bentaleb could return to his team for the trip to AFC Bournemouth.

Both midfielders missed the 2-0 loss to Manchester City due to a niggle and suspension respectively.

But the pair will jet down to the South Coast for a clash that could take Newcastle to 42 points for the season with six games to go.

Bruce said: "With four games in 11 days, I am going to use part of the squad.

“I think we’ve got a clean bill of health.

"We left Jonjo (on the bench against Man City) and Nabil (Bentaleb) was suspended at the weekend, so that will come into the thinking.

“I think it’s only right that I freshen us up.

"I don’t want to go to down Bournemouth, with them not having had a game for a week, and not acknowledge the fact that the fourth game in 11 days for us is a big call.

"I will be making some changes, and hopefully, that pays off.”

Winger Matt Ritchie is also a doubt for the trip with a hamstring problem that kept him out of the Man City game.

Bruce was asked about his fitness status and said: "He's touch and go".
