Newcastle considering shock deal for former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker

Newcastle are considering a shock cut-price deal to bring Steven Caulker back to England.

The former Three Lions and GB Olympics centre-back has resurrected his career in Turkey.

Caulker, 27, has established himself in the side at top-flight Alanyaspor since joining in January on a free.

But he has just one year left on his contract and could be available for as little as £2million.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce, where former Spurs guru Damien Comolli is sporting director, are planning a January move.

But new Toon boss Steve Bruce is a long-term admirer and has been making enquiries about Caulker's fitness and form after he impressed in pre-season.

Caulker started his career at Tottenham , joined Cardiff for £8million in 2013 and moved to QPR for the same amount a year later.

Caulker has also had loan spells at Southampton and Liverpool .

He scored on his only England appearance, a 4-2 loss against Sweden in November 2012, and played for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

But he previously admitted battling problems off the pitch with his mental health.
