Newcastle city centre branch of Starbucks closes its doors for good

A prominent Newcastle city centre branch of Starbucks has closed its doors for good.

The coffee shop on Grainger Street, near Grey's Monument, shut on Sunday, the company has confirmed.

The chain said it is always ensuring its cafés are based in "relevant" places for its customers.

A spokesperson for Starbucks said: “We regularly review our portfolio to ensure our stores are in places that are relevant for our customers while also maintaining healthy business growth.

"We can confirm that our store on Grainger Street closed on Sunday 1 September. We would like to thank our customers for their loyalty over the years and let them know their nearest Starbucks store is at Eldon Square .”

Following the closure of the branch there are still six branches of the coffee giant in central Newcastle and Jesmond.

In June, accounts were published for the company which showed it plunged £17million into the red in the 12 months to September last year.

Bosses blamed “challenging” trading conditions and taking a £20million non-cash hit from slashing the value of leases on loss-making stores.

Accounts for the Starbucks Coffee Company UK showed it nevertheless paid £4million in corporation tax here, up from £3.3million in 2017.

However, it was still less than the £6.7million it paid in 2016.
