Newcastle Cathedral's Dawn Vigil promises unique Easter treat for early risers

The roof-top of the 12th Century Newcastle Keep will provide the dramatic setting to a dawn vigil on Easter Sunday.

As the sun begins to rise behind the historic landmark on April 21 it will be marked by fire and song in a unique celebration hosted by Newcastle Cathedral .

And, in the company of the Cathedral Choir, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for visitors - if they manage to get out of bed in time.

The cathedral's Easter Sunday Dawn Vigil with Easter Fire is an annual event which begins at 5am.

It's free to attend and those who arrive at the Keep at that hour will find it in darkness - a symbol for Christians of the world's darkness before Christ - save for a few candles in the Great Hall where the special service will begin.

The choir will perform medieval plainsong - chanting - in the atmospheric hall, followed by ancient scriptures, then - singing all the way - the choir will lead people up the Keep's spiral staircase which leads to the open roof-top.

There, everyone will face east to wait for the Easter sunrise; a fire will be lit, and blessed, followed by the Easter Candle as the sun appears over the city, revealing the remarkable views in all directions, including of the Tyne.

Easter Hallelujahs will be shouted and Thine be the Glory will be sung to mark the day of celebration and new life.

Organisers say the vigil is a "wonderful experience" and everyone - regardless of faith - is welcome to attend, adding: "It is a rather unique, dramatic and beautiful experience in the early hours of Easter Sunday atop Newcastle’s Castle Keep accompanied by the Newcastle Cathedral Choir and the lighting of Easter fire in the dawn light."
