Newcastle Carabao Cup final ticket allocation could see season ticket holders miss out

It’s been 24 years since Newcastle United were last at Wembley in a major cup final. That's a long, long wait for a Toon Army starved of success under Mike Ashley.

Baggy jeans and blue eyeshadow were among the fashion trends, Ricky Martin was Livin La Vida Loca, and - spoiler alert - Bruce Willis was actually dead in The Sixth Sense. What a time to be alive (or not, in Bruce’s case).

For Newcastle fans, they were almost spoilt. 1999 saw the third trip to the Twin Towers in four years, after the Charity Shield visit in 1996 and then an FA Cup Final in 1998. They were to return the following year, too, with a semi-final against Chelsea. All ended in defeat, but those four visits were memorable for seeing a swarm of black and white on Wembley Way as fans flocked to the famous old stadium.

A Wembley cup final will look very different for supporters on February 26, when United return. Rebuilt, revamped and revitalised, the iconic home of football is now a modern day super stadium holding 90,000. Not quite the size of its older version, but still the biggest in the country.

Despite its huge capacity, however, many Newcastle fans are fretting over whether they can get a ticket for the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester United. The Magpies announced on Thursday the criteria for allocating tickets and are likely to get approximately 32,000-33,000 seats, but with a monumental fanbase clamouring to see Eddie Howe’s men hopefully raise their first domestic trophy in 68 years, they could sell that number twice over.

The thorny issue of how the club allocates those tickets has sparked huge debate online. While Newcastle haven’t officially revealed how many season ticket holders they have this year, estimates suggest it is around 35,000, meaning there could be some disappointed fans who miss out on the game.
