Newcastle captain sends Liverpool FC warning amid Man City title race

Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles has vowed to 'make it tough' for Liverpool when Newcastle host the pretenders to Manchester City's Premier League title on Saturday night.

City are a point clear of Liverpool with two games to play and will retain the league crown for the first time in their history with victories against Leicester and Brighton.

Liverpool have not won the league since 1990 but, should City win the title, the Anfield outfit will record the highest points total in the Premier League's history for a team finishing second.

Their trip to Newcastle, managed by former boss Rafa Benitez, comes in between Liverpool's Champions League semi-final legs and Barcelona, and Lascelles insists there will be no room for Jurgen Klopp's side to take their foot off the gas at St. James' Park.

"We are going to make it tough for them. They probably know that themselves," said the defender. "It is not a nice fixture to come here, especially with our recent home form."

Newcastle have won six of their last seven league games, conceding just five goals in that run, and Lascelles believes the Magpies have become a force to be reckoned with during the latter stages of the campaign.

"We normally do finish off strongly — last season, we beat Chelsea 3-0," he explained.

"They will obviously be playing for the title, so they will be flying. It won’t be like the Chelsea game where I think they were done and they weren’t really playing well. We are going to make it tough. We are going to go for the win and we want to keep going until the very last game of the season."
