Newcastle brewery offers free beer to mark virtual Blaydon Race

A Newcastle brewery is creating a new beer to mark the virtual take on the region's famous Blaydon Race and it's giving away 300 bottles of it for free.

Hadrian Border Brewery currently has its new Virtual Blaydon Race Ale up for grabs for first customers who place an order up until June 11.

And it also will be making donations to the Metro Radio Cash for Kids charity, which is the race's chosen good cause this year.

The Blaydon Race , which as anyone who knows the song which inspired it will know, takes place on June 9 each year between Newcastle and Blaydon.

And this time around, with no possibility of its usual crowd-lined spectacle taking place, organisers decided to turn what should have been its big 40th birthday event into what is the first - and they say hopefully last - Virtual Blaydon Race.

And race fans signed up in droves for the challenge which will see them complete the same six-mile distance anywhere they like on Tuesday and at any time, day or night, with £1 from each entry fee going to Cash For Kids..

They then will send in their results and there will be prizes going to the winners.

Hadrian Border Brewery, in Newburn Industrial Estate, has brewed a winner's beer for the run each year since 2014 and a spokesman said: "So this year we've knocked up something to mark this futuristic run.

"To keep up with tradition, we've got a handful of beers - 300 to be precise - to mark this historic event."

The full artwork for the beer bottle has not yet been released but the first 300 orders placed with the brewery up to and including June 11 will get to see, and taste, the finished result. The free beer offer is subject to availability on a first-come, first-served basis and it's one bottle per customer.
