Newcastle boss Steve Bruce says club will look at Bosman transfers this summer - and reflects on takeover talk

Steve Bruce has revealed Newcastle United have already started their recruitment process for next summer by dipping into the free transfer market.

As reported by Chronicle Live on Saturday morning, United have already started work for next season with the takeover situation still uncertain.

Bruce is keen to make sure United will be strong enough to compete next term and admits that Bosman transfers will be a common occurrence ahead of the changing financial climate.

Bruce said: "I'm sure most clubs have done the same. Is there a Bosman out there that can improve us?

"They are out of contract and you can speak to them whenever you want. That has been on the agenda.

"As for moving anything else, our plans for pre-season that we had in place have been scuppered.

"We don't even know the start date for next season. I am not alone."

United restart their season with a home clash against Sheffield United but there has been no shortage of action off the field in the last three months with a Middle East consortium attempting to buy the club from Mike Ashley.

Bruce says he has sympathy for fans after several predicted dates for a takeover didn't materialise.

Bruce said: "Unfortunately it hasn't just happened once.

"I am only reading from afar but yeah you can feel for everybody concerned.

"For me, I can't influence it. I can't comment on it.

"I am glad about that because I can't be sitting here telling you anything different.

"All I can influence is, let's not make it an excuse on the playing angle.

"It is what it is. We are paid to perform on a Saturday or Sunday.

"My staff have to ignore stuff that's speculation and get on with the job in hand."
