Newcastle boss Steve Bruce 'safer in his job than Mauricio Pochettino, Nuno or Marco Silva'

Steve Bruce's position as head coach with Newcastle United is safer than some of the division's so-called big hitters - according to a clutch of bookmakers.

Bruce was deemed as favourite to lose his job first by Odds Monkey in both July and August, but a steady if unspectacular start - with five points posted so far - has resulted in others coming under more fire.

The reality is that Mike Ashley is not a fan of sacking managers or paying out compensation , but he was pushed into that position in 2016 when Rafa Benitez replaced Steve McClaren.

An Odds Monkey spokesperson Peter Watton said: "The Premier League Sack Race gets underway in July, and this year it opened up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard as favourites, but before the month finished it became newly appointed Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

"Early August and it was yet another new name in the shape of Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

"Bruce was again backed into favourite in mid-August, before the end of the month saw Watford’s Javi Gracia emerge as favourite.

"And the start of September the first runner in the race went down and it was indeed the favourite Gracia who was dismissed.

"After Watford made their move it was Solskjaer, Lampard and Bruce who once again led the way.

"Early September and another new name was promoted to the head of the pack as Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino became favourite, but he has soon being overthrown with Marco Silva taking charge."
