Newcastle boss Howe eager to hang onto goalkeeper Dubravka

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remains optimistic about retaining goalkeeper Martin Dubravka at St James' Park after the January transfer window, despite interest from Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab.

The 35-year-old Slovak keeper, whose contract expires in six months, has demonstrated exceptional form, allowing only two goals in seven consecutive victories whilst covering for the injured Nick Pope.

His performances have helped Newcastle advance in the League Cup and maintain fifth position in the Premier League.

"Martin's been in a difficult situation," Howe said on Friday. "Like any player that is coming out of contract in the summer, with every player that I've ever worked with, there's always that feeling of doubt.

"He will naturally want some conclusion to his future, whether that's a new contract with us, whatever the outcome. But he's certainly played very well and I've been really pleased with him."

Dubravka's emotional response after Tuesday's Arsenal match, where he appeared tearful, led to speculation about his departure. Since joining Newcastle under Rafael Benitez in January 2018, he has primarily served as backup to Nick Pope, including a stint at Manchester United.

Regarding Sunday's FA Cup fixture against Bromley, Howe acknowledged Dubravka's connection to the club: "I know how much Newcastle means to him and you can see that emotionally, he's very invested."

Reports suggest Newcastle's interest in Burnley's England under-21 keeper James Trafford as a potential replacement.

When questioned about Pope's position as first-choice goalkeeper, Howe remained non-committal, stating: "It's always in a state of flux. It's always changing and moving because that's down to the player's performances."
