Newcastle boss Eddie Howe among favourites to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is among the bookmakers favourites to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager. The Three Lions World Cup campaign came to a disappointing end after a Quarter Final defeat to defending champions France.

The defeat has raised further questions over the future of the head coach of the national team with his contract currently expiring following Euro 2024. Southgate statistically ranks above World Cup winning boss Sir Alf Ramsay for wins at a major international tournament, winning more games than any of his predecessors.

However, that hasn't stopped critics calling for the head coach to be replaced given the crop of talent at his disposal. Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel were two names touted with replacing Southgate prior to the World Cup, but their odds have drifted in recent days.

Nonetheless, Howe has distanced himself from the role in recent months, with Newcastle United third in the Premier League. Speaking about the England job in September, Howe said: "Gareth has done an incredible job - I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I never say never. Never say ‘no, it won’t be something I am interested in’.

"But, in the short term, [being England manager] is not on my radar at all. I have always said I love the day-to-day coaching, love being with the players on the training ground.

"International football, you get that taken away for long periods. At this moment in my life that is not something I want to do."
