Newcastle 'beaten' to former Celtic youngster as interest in Arsenal defender intensifies

Newcastle United have been 'beaten' to the signature of former Celtic midfielder Armstrong Okoflex, according to reports.

The 19-year-old allowed his contract at the Scottish side run down and will reportedly now sign for West Ham.

The winger was said to be frustrated at the lack of opportunities at Parkhead and made the decision to leave, which alerted Crystal Palace and Newcastle according to Herald and Times Sport.

However, Okoflex has picked West Ham and is said to be in the capital to secure the move.

Meanwhile, several clubs are said to be interested in Arsenal's William Saliba - including Newcastle United.

As reported last week, Newcastle scouted Saliba while he was on loan at Nice last season but they are not alone to have done so.

With reports that Arsenal are open to letting the young defender leave, reports in France claim Nice, Stade Rennais, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille are all interested alongside Southampton and Newcastle and 'several' Italian clubs.

Newcastle are set to confirm extensions for Fabian Schar and Paul Dummett and have offered Federico Fernandez a new deal too but head coach Steve Bruce is keen to bring a new centre-back this summer.
