Newcastle are already working on a solution that may lead to £20m decision paying off even more

Callum Wilson has revealed that he is working with Newcastle United staff to ensure that the No 9 plays 'as many games as possible' this season after missing a chunk of the previous campaign through injury.

Although niggling muscle injuries disrupted the second half of Wilson's debut season on Tyneside, the striker still managed to finish the campaign as the club's top scorer with 12 goals.

Wilson was ultimately voted Newcastle's player of the year after the 29-year-old brought a new dimension to the Magpies' frontline with his movement, link-up play and proven Premier League pedigree.

Newcastle simply look a different side when Wilson is fit and firing and, with next year's World Cup at the back of his mind, the £20m man has set himself two important targets for the upcoming season.

As well as wanting to play in as many games as possible, Wilson hopes to score 20 Premier League goals in a single campaign for the first time in his career.

The last player to do the latter for Newcastle was Alan Shearer in 2004; Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, Kevin Nolan, Demba Ba, Loic Remy, Papiss Cisse, Gini Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez are among those who have come and gone since then.

Wilson, however, fancies his chances of getting close to that total as long as he avoids a repeat of last season's injury woes and the striker has been working hard in pre-season to ensure he is as 'robust' as possible ahead of the big kick-off against West Ham on Sunday.

"I only made 23 starts or something like that," he told Sky Sports about his first season at the club.

"That was a bit frustrating. Missing 15 starts is a little bit disappointing but we're working on that this year to make sure we can get as many games in as possible.

"The conversion rate I was working at was good so if I'd got another 15 games in, that would have taken me closer to 20 goals.

"So that's the plan this year: to play as many games as possible and keep the standards of being clinical and finishing when I get the chance."
