The runway at Newcastle Airport will be temporarily closed this evening while the Royal Australian Air Force investigates an airfield issue.
A Newcastle Airport spokesman confirmed further flights will not be operating into the evening on Monday due to an airfield issue affecting night operations.
"Newcastle Airport is working closely with the Royal Australian Air Force and our airline partners to manage the disruption and will provide further updates as more information becomes available," the spokesman said.
"As a result, flights will not be operating from Newcastle Airport during the evening, however, flights will resume tomorrow during daylight hours."
Passengers are being urged to check directly with their airline for the latest information regarding flights.
The Newcastle Herald understands the issue with the runway is not related to recent reports that drones were flying near Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown air force base earlier this month.
The Daily Telegraph revealed that "multiple confirmed" uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) reportedly breached restricted airspace between July 11 and 13.
The Telegraph reported that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) did not know who was operating the drones or why, but had issued reports to the NSW Police Counter-UAS Unit.
