Newcastle aim European Super League dig in Liverpool's direction on social media

Chief Newcastle United reporter Lee Ryder awarded Martin Dubravka the Man of the Match award in his full-time player ratings but Newcastle United's Twitter admin put themselves in contention for an honorary bottle of champagne with some quick witted social media skill.

They nailed the mood among football fans with their tweet as the final whistle echoed around an empty Anfield.

After a fraught week in the world of football, where fan outcry helped derail a shocking bid from Liverpool and a dozen other clubs form a European Super League, the club's official Twitter threw some delicious shade in the direction of Liverpool.

Although Joe Willock's dramatic last-gasp goal may have only earned United a point it felt like a victory for the hundreds of European clubs, and their millions of fans who united in their disgusted at the behaviour of Europe's so-called elite teams' attempts to monopolise the beautiful game.

The equaliser was particularly sweet given the harsh circumstances in which Callum Wilson's injury-time goal was disallowed for handball. This despite Wilson being unable to do anything about it, gaining little or no advantage from the action and receiving a nudge in the back from Trent Alexander-Arnold immediately before he reached the ball.

Liverpool's owner John Henry was forced into a public apology earlier in the week and his actions may take a while for him and Liverpool to live down. Especially when there are sharp-witted social media officers around.
