Newcastle 2 Man City 1: Magpies pull off shock win to boost Liverpool title hopes

Newcastle United pulled off one of the shocks of the season as they beat Manchester City to hand Liverpool a huge Premier League title boost.

Goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie earned Rafa Benitez's side a 2-1 win, meaning Liverpool have the chance to go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League when they face Leicester tomorrow.

It had all started swimmingly for the visitors, as they took the lead straight from the kick off, Raheem Sterling and David Silva combining to leave Sergio Aguero a tap-in.

City were in cruise control, and dominated the first half but failed to add to the scoreline, and when Rondon reacted first to bundle home to level the scores just after the hour mark, Pep Guardiola's side were stunned.

But worse was to come as Fernandinho turned on the edge of his penalty area, clumsily giving the ball to Ritchie and then fouling the winger in a desperate attempt to recover. Ritchie stepped up to rattle the penalty through the diving Ederson, who might have done better, and send St James' park into ecstasy.

The result caps an encouraging day for Newcastle fans, with reports claiming they will finally break a club transfer record that has stood since 2005, with the signing of Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.
