Newcastle United were 1-0 up at half-time after a much-improved performance against West Ham in China.
United were under the control of Steve Bruce for the first time and showed much more intensity and verve as they dominated the first 45 minutes against West Ham.
The Hammers were second best throughout and the Magpies led at the break thanks to a goal from Yoshinori Muto. Here’s how Lee Ryder – the Chronicle’s man in China – rated the players.
Martin Dubravka 7
Didn’t have a great deal to do in fairness. Dealt well with West Ham’s balls into the box.
Jamie Sterry 8
Got forward a few times and provided a fine cross for Muto’s goal. A good half from the youngster.
Fabian Schar 7
Steady enough. Newcastle can’t afford to lose him if AC Milan come knocking.
Jamaal Lascelles 7
Much better from the skipper compared to Nanjing.
Ciaran Clark 6
Got away with a bruising challenge on Zabaleta. Didn’t pick up a card but may have in a Premier League game.

Worked hard but couldn’t find that killer pass into the box.

Some fine balls forward as he tried to unlock West Ham defence. Had a shot saved from long range at the end of the half.

Another solid display from the man who is keen to quit the club.

Played a decent ball forward for Muto but he misread the pass. A crunching challenge on Declan Rice helped set the tone.
Yoshinori Muto 8
Full of running. Demanding the ball from his team-mates now and made no mistake from Sterry’s cross.

Blazed over with an early chance. Stll worked hard after missing a golden opportunity.
