One of Brookfield Zoo’s newest residents, a California sea lion pup, will soon be ready for its public debut.
The unnamed male pup was born on June 10, and is a part of the zoo’s Pinniped Point, the area that houses grey seals, in addition to California sea lions. The pup and his mother, 9-year-old Josephine, nicknamed “Josie,” are expected to have access to their outdoor habitat by mid-July.
The mother and pup have been bonding in the weeks since his birth, with Josie teaching the pup how to swim.
The pup is the newest addition to Josie’s family at Brookfield Zoo; her first pup, Lucy, was born in 2017 and still resides at the zoo. Both children have been sired by Tanner, a 16-year-old California sea lion.
Josie has been a part of the Brookfield Zoo family since her rescue in 2010. She was abandoned by her mother in San Francisco at a popular tourist destination, where she would have died without human intervention.
Admission to Brookfield Zoo, 8400 31st Street in Brookfield, starts at $15.95 for children and seniors. The cost of entry is $21.95 for adults. Parking at the zoo costs $14.
