Newborn humpback whale found washed up dead on the Isle of Lewis

A newborn whale has been found dead on a Scots beach.

The baby Humpback washed up at Traigh Mhor, North Tolsta on the Isle of Lewis on Wednesday.

The tragic creature was discovered completely in tact and measured 14.6ft or 4.5m long.

Stornoway Coastguard Rescue Team was deployed to the scene at 17:43 following reports the animal was stranded.

However, it was sadly confirmed to be dead and handed over to the local council for disposal.

Writing about the incident, the coastguard said: "The team were paged yesterday to reports of a whale stranded on the Traigh Mor in Tolsta.

"The team confirmed that the whale was deceased so passed photos and relevant details to the Operations Centre to pass to British Divers Marine Life Rescue and the local authorities.

A spokesman for the Marine Stranding Scheme Scotland said: "We had a report of a supposed minke whale from the coastguard on Wednesday but we have yet to receive the photos.

"It’s not a minke, it’s a humpback whale and judging by the size a neonate.

"Depending on Covid restrictions we may investigate further."
